Puppy Classes

What are "puppy classes"?

This program is offered for owners of puppies up to 5 months old.  A group of at least 5
puppies and their owners and families will meet to provide needed socialization for their
puppies.  Socialization is a very important and necessary part of puppy development.  As
owners of breeds that are considered aggressive, you have a responsibility to properly
socialize and train these breeds to prevent aggression.  A properly socialized puppy will be
less fearful, less aggressive, and more accepting of other people and dogs and will be more
comfortable in a variety of environments.  Please note your puppy should not be taken to
parks or places other dogs have been until they have had all of their age-appropriate
vaccines.

Class Requirements:

It is important for dog owners to understand the role they play when choosing classes to train their dog.
The owner is required to do training exercises consistently and daily at home.  It takes a very dedicated
and committed owner with adequate time to successfully train a dog.  Owners will often find it challenging
to train their dog with their busy schedules due to the time requirements and amount of work and
consistency necessary to complete  training.  There are distractions to overcome in both class and home
settings.  In order for a dog to respect and obey their owner, the owner must be a calm and assertive pack
leader, which can be a challenge for some owners.  Class-based training is not guaranteed by Hartwell
Kennels as the owner is required to do the work at home.  All dog breeds are welcome to attend.  There
will be some training supplies needed to provide necessary reinforcement of training in the home that
aren't included in fees of classes and will be provided by Hartwell Kennels for an additional fee.

All dogs attending classes
must be current on vaccines and owner must present at first class the dog's
current vaccine records.   No one will be admitted without this documentation for the safety and health of
others attending.  In order for us to have a class, we must have at least 2 people attending.  Due to the
space available, there is a maximum limit per class of 5 people.

What you will learn from group, in-home & private classes:

  • You will be taught "how to train" your dog to - sit, down (lay down), come, heel (walk with), off,
    sit/stay, and down/stay.
  • You will be taught the positive and motivational techniques required to effectively and safely train
    your dog.
  • You will be provided a list of do's and don'ts to gain better control and the respect needed from
your dog to successfully train it.
  • If having house training issues, we can provide suggestions and written information on methods and
do's and don'ts of house training.
  • The individual needs of your dog will be addressed and you'll be provided suggestions to meet its
specific needs to improve the effectiveness of your training and its willingness to participate.
