Board to Train (In-board Training)
Board to train or in-board training means your dog will stay at our facility for the length of time required to
complete the training course you choose - 3 weeks for basic obedience training and 5 weeks for advanced
obedience training.  Please see our web page entitled "Boarding" for additional information about our
kennel and pictures of our boarding facilities.  Hartwell Kennels offers a
money-back guarantee on the
board to train or in-board training program
.
While your dog is boarded with us, the trainer will do all the hardest work and lead your dog through the
first two phases of obedience training.  It is the owner's responsibility to continue and maintain this training
at home and to complete the third phase of "proofing."  It is very important to apply the commands your
dog has learned to his everyday life.  Doing so will improve communication between dog and owner and
will ultimately lead to a better relationship and a happier and healthier dog.

We offer real solutions to your dog's problems or needs.  Obedience training is a very helpful tool for ensuring
better control of your dog and a better relationship as your dog will understand its boundaries and what is
expected of them.  Use of obedience will enable your dog to be happier and healthier.  You and your dog can
learn how to use obedience training to make both your lives easier and training could even save your dog's life
one day.

Our training philosophy is simple.  We recognize the unique differences of every dog and each family's
situation.  We address these differences by implementing a training program and goal plan that meets the
unique and individual needs of each dog and family.

Our training methods and techniques are based on positive and motivational principles.  Our goal is to motivate
your dog in a positive manner to learn and perform and build confidence through success with humane,
consistent and interactive training.  We treat each dog as an active participant and our knowledge of animal
behavior and years of experience with dogs allow us to shape the dog's behavior to act as willing participants in
the training process rather than forcing them against their will.  Dog's should be at least 5 to 6 months old
before beginning any of our programs.

There are three phases in the training process:
teaching, correction, & proofing

The teaching phase is when the dog will learn the association between the command and the physical action on
the dog's behalf.

The
correction phase is when the dog will learn that obedience commands are not optional and must be done
the first time given a command.

The
proofing phase is when the dog is exposed to environmental distractions while obedience is expected.

The most difficult phases are the first two.  Consistency and repetition and practice, practice, practice are vital.
This enables the dog to make a permanent and strong association between the commands and the actions.  In
these phases, the dog's individual temperament and personality must be considered.  Patience, problem
solving skills and devoting a significant amount of time are a very important and critical part of the learning
phase.  In the correction phase, the dog must be taught clear and instructive corrections.  The same principles
of time, patience and consistency are necessary for the dog to understand the expectations set forth.
BEHAVIOR & BEHAVIOR PROBLEMS:

It is important to remember that almost all behavior problems are natural dog behaviors that owners just find
to be a problem within their household.  There are certain behaviors that are just plain obnoxious and then
there are some behaviors that are truly dangerous.  The role of a professional trainer is to understand the
cause of the behavior problem and attempt to either change the behavior of the dog or of the owner.  Most
times it is better to address the behavior of the dog and the owner together.

One of the primary causes of behavior problems is the lack of communication between the dog and their
owner.  Obedience training provides a way for owners to manage their dog's behavior daily.  Obedience
training will also provide the dog with something to do, reducing boredom and urges to be unruly and
destructive, and it will calm the dog in general and increase its attentiveness to its owners.  Obedience
training is an important first step in correcting behavior problems.
We will use obedience training as part of the solution to most problem behaviors; using trained behaviors as
substitutes for and to modify inappropriate behaviors.  Hartwell Kennels offers a variety of training programs
to fit every lifestyle and budget.
